Janitor AI Suspended From Gemini? What to Check

Short answer: if Gemini stopped working in Janitor AI, the cause is usually one of three things: a rate-limit or quota error (429), a content filter block, or an API key that stopped working. Only the last one is anything like a suspension, and Google has not published a public explanation for it. Work out which of the three you have before you change anything, because each has a different fix.

This guide separates what Google documents from what users only report. It also shows how to check your own quota instead of trusting a "magic number", how to read the errors, and how to keep a second provider ready. Google's documentation was checked on October 7, 2026.

The three problems people call "suspended"

What you see What it usually is Documented by Google?
429 error Rate or quota limit reached Yes
"No content received from AI Studio due to filtering" A safety filter blocked the reply Partly. Filters are documented; the exact message is user-reported
Key stops working entirely Key revoked, deleted or restricted Not explained publicly

What the Gemini limits actually are

Google's rate limit documentation says limits are measured in requests per minute (RPM), input tokens per minute (TPM) and requests per day (RPD). Exceeding any one of them triggers an error, even if the others are fine. Its example: with an RPM limit of 20, the 21st request in a minute fails even if your token count is low.

Four details from that page matter for Janitor AI users.

  • Limits apply per project, not per API key. A second key in the same Google project does not add quota.
  • Daily quotas reset at midnight Pacific time. That is 07:00 UTC while US daylight saving time is active and 08:00 UTC in winter.
  • Limits depend on the model and your usage tier. Google lists Free, Tier 1 (an active linked billing account), Tier 2 (paid $100 and 3 days since first payment) and Tier 3 (paid $1,000 and 30 days). Preview and experimental models are more restricted.
  • The numbers are not in the docs. Google says to view your active limits in AI Studio, and adds that "specified rate limits are not guaranteed and actual capacity may vary."

That is why articles promising "1,000 free messages a day" cannot be checked. No Google page states a fixed free-tier message count. Treat any exact free figure as unverified until you see it in your own AI Studio rate limit page, because limits change by model and over time.

Paid tiers also have spend-based limits that are evaluated over a rolling 10-minute window: $10 for Tier 1, $50 for Tier 2 and $200 for Tier 3. Hitting one returns a 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED error, and Google's advice is to wait, reduce expensive requests with smaller context windows or shorter outputs, or request an increase.

How to read the error

Google's API error reference separates errors that look similar. Match what Janitor AI shows to this table.

Error HTTP Meaning What to do
rate_limit_exceeded 429 Per-minute or per-second request or token limit Wait and retry with backoff
quota_exceeded 429 Daily quota used up Wait for the reset or ask for an increase
authentication 401 Key missing, invalid or expired Check or replace the key
permission_denied 403 Key lacks permission for the resource Check project access and key restrictions
payment_required 402 Prepay credit balance is empty Add credits. Do not retry
model_not_found 404 Model name wrong Fix the model name
invalid_request 400 Malformed request or bad parameter Check the parameters
service_unavailable 503 Google is overloaded Wait and retry

Google's troubleshooting guide adds a rule worth keeping: retry on 429, 408 and 5xx errors, with exponential backoff, but do not retry 400, 402 or 403, because those mean a problem that retrying cannot fix. Pressing send again on a 403 only wastes your time.

Fix a 429 error

  1. Open the AI Studio rate limit page and see which limit you hit: per minute, per day or tokens.
  2. If it is a per-minute limit, wait a minute and send shorter messages. A long chat history is many input tokens on every request.
  3. If it is the daily limit, you are out until the reset, or you can link billing to move up a tier.
  4. Shorten the character definition and memory notes. Context length is a common cause of token-limit errors. Janitor AI's memory guide shows a compact bullet format.
  5. Remember that thinking models spend extra tokens. Google's troubleshooting guide says Gemini 3.x models have thinking enabled by default, which raises latency and token use, and that you can lower the thinking level or turn it off.
  6. Switch to another model for the rest of the day. DeepSeek is a pay-per-token alternative covered below.

One more possible cause of a 400 error: Google's troubleshooting guide lists the valid temperature range as 0.0 to 1.0. Janitor AI's temperature slider can go higher in some setups, so if the error appears right after you raise it, set it back to 1.0 or lower and test again. This is our inference from the two documents, so confirm it on your own account.

What about filter messages?

A filter block is not a ban. The Gemini API has four adjustable safety categories, harassment, hate speech, sexually explicit and dangerous content, plus built-in protections that are "always blocked and cannot be adjusted", according to Google's safety settings page. It blocks on the probability that content is unsafe, not on severity, so harmless fiction can sometimes trip it. The page also warns that applications using less restrictive settings "may be subject to review."

A Google Developers Forum thread titled Gemini 2.5 pro bc this is getting too far collects user reports of "No content received from AI Studio due to filtering" on safe fictional writing. A Google staff reply there points to adjustable safety settings and adds that "Gemini still has some default safety filters that cannot be bypassed."

Google's troubleshooting guide also describes BlockedReason.OTHER, which it says means the query or response may violate the terms of service or be otherwise unsupported. In practice, the realistic options are to rephrase the scene, shorten the context or use another model. A settings trick will not reliably remove the built-in filters.

What about a revoked key?

Some users in the same thread say their keys stopped working. Google did not confirm or explain these cases there, so treat them as reports and not as documented policy. Practical steps:

  • Check your email and the Google Cloud and AI Studio consoles for any notice.
  • Confirm the key still exists and has no restrictions that exclude the service.
  • Read the current Gemini API terms.
  • Use a separate Google project for experiments, not your main one.
  • Never share the key. A leaked key can be abused and revoked.

Note that Janitor AI has its own account help, including an article on bans, which concerns your Janitor AI account and not your Google key.

Why a backup provider helps

Janitor AI lets you save more than one proxy configuration. Keep a Gemini one and a DeepSeek one, and switch when either fails. At an assumed 8,000 input and 400 output tokens per message, DeepSeek Flash costs about $2.88 per 1,000 messages at peak and $1.44 off-peak with no caching, per our DeepSeek API pricing breakdown. Setup takes about five minutes with our DeepSeek on Janitor AI guide, and the exact values are in DeepSeek proxy URL for Janitor AI. If you are unsure what the word means, see what a proxy is on Janitor AI.

If you subscribe to Janitor+, the site also offers a built-in Router that lets you use third-party models without an external proxy. See our what Janitor AI is overview for how that fits in.

Quick checklist

  1. Read the exact error text and match it to the table.
  2. Look at your real quota in AI Studio.
  3. Trim the context and cap the reply length.
  4. Do not retry 400, 402 or 403 errors.
  5. Protect your key and never share it.
  6. Keep a second model configured.

FAQ

Why is Gemini not working on Janitor AI?

The usual causes are a 429 rate or quota error, a safety filter block, or a key problem. Match the exact error text to Google's error table, check your limits in AI Studio, and test with a short message before assuming a suspension.

Can I get 1,000 free messages a day on Gemini in Janitor AI?

No official page confirms that number. Google says limits vary by model and usage tier and tells you to view them in AI Studio. Treat any fixed free-tier figure as unverified until it appears in your own dashboard.

Does a second API key give more Gemini quota?

No. Google states that rate limits apply per project, not per API key. A second key in the same project shares the same quota, and daily limits reset at midnight Pacific time.

What does No content received from AI Studio due to filtering mean?

It is the message users report when a Gemini safety filter blocks a reply. Google documents four adjustable filters and built-in protections that cannot be adjusted. It is a block on that reply, not a ban on your account.

Should I retry after a 403 or 402 error from Gemini?

No. Google's troubleshooting guide says not to retry 400, 402 or 403 errors, because they indicate a bad key, permission problem, empty prepay balance or bad request. Retry only 429, 408 and 5xx errors, with exponential backoff.

What is a good backup if Gemini fails on Janitor AI?

Save a second proxy configuration with another provider. DeepSeek Flash costs about $2.88 per 1,000 messages at peak under an assumed 8,000 input and 400 output tokens, and takes about five minutes to set up.
