Obligations for general-purpose AI providers have applied since 2 August 2025, so the rules themselves are a year old.
From 2 August 2026 the AI Office can demand documentation, evaluate models, order mitigation, fine up to 3% of global annual turnover, and require a model's withdrawal from the EU market.
Providers that signed the voluntary Code of Practice have their cooperation weighed when the Commission calculates a penalty.
