Weather apps
Google Play shows a data-safety declaration one app at a time. Here are 5 weather apps side by side, so the differences are visible rather than remembered. Categories none of them declares are hidden.
Weather is the original trade of location for a free service, and location is the load-bearing row on this page. It is also the row that makes this category unlike the others here: sharing data with third parties is uncommon across most of this dataset, and weather apps account for a large share of the sharing that does appear — location included. Worth knowing, though, is that the trade is not inherent to forecasting. Some apps below declare no location collection at all, which is possible because a forecast needs a place rather than a person, and models resolve to areas measured in kilometres. Where an app declares precise location, the useful question is what the extra resolution is for.

Questions about weather apps
- Does a weather app need my precise location to give an accurate forecast?
- Generally no. Forecast models produce values for grid areas measured in kilometres, so a city or postcode resolves to the same forecast that GPS coordinates would. Precise location can improve radar and severe-weather alerts, but it is not universal even in this category: two of the five apps compared here decline location access entirely, and one declares only approximate location.
- Why do weather apps share so much more than apps in other categories?
- Location paired with a device identifier is exactly the combination the advertising market values, and most weather apps are free. The declarations reflect that: this is the category where entries most often list location and identifiers under shared rather than only collected. It is not uniform, though — the grid below also contains apps that declare no sharing at all.
