Office 2021 stops getting security fixes on October 13, 2026. Microsoft offers no extended support and no paid security program for it. Your apps keep opening files after that date. They just stop receiving patches.

What actually happens on October 13?

Office 2021 is the perpetual-license edition of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook that Microsoft sold from late 2021. On October 13, 2026, Microsoft stops providing technical support, bug fixes and security updates for it, according to Microsoft's lifecycle announcement.

Nothing switches off. Microsoft's end-of-support page for individuals says the apps may keep working. The risk is that every flaw found after the date stays unpatched.

There is no rescue program. Windows 10 has a paid security-update option for consumers. Office 2021 has none. The o365hq end-of-support guide puts it plainly: no extended support phase and no paid ESU program.

Why do Microsoft 365 connections matter more than patches?

Microsoft supports connections to Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and OneDrive only from Office versions still in support. That is the line in the o365hq summary of Microsoft's policy. After October 13, an Office 2021 install that syncs to a work mailbox or a shared drive sits outside that support.

For a home user with a personal Outlook.com account, this changes little today. For someone whose employer runs Microsoft 365, it is the bigger problem. Monthly service changes are no longer tested against Office 2021 clients. Sync bugs then become your problem.

What are the three ways forward?

You can keep Office 2021, buy a new perpetual license, or subscribe. Each has a clear price and a clear catch.

Office Home 2024 is Microsoft's current one-time-purchase bundle of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for a single PC or Mac. Who can safely stay on Office 2021?

Staying put is defensible for a narrow group. Consider a PC that never touches email attachments, never opens files from strangers and never signs in to a work account. A home budget spreadsheet on an offline laptop is one example.

Everyone else has a real exposure. Word and Excel are common targets because people open files from outside. A macro-heavy workbook that arrives by email is the classic path. Once patching stops, the app cannot close a newly found hole. The US cyber agency CISA lists running unsupported software among its bad practices, and says that use of end-of-life software raises the risk of exploitation.

If you use Outlook to reach a Microsoft 365 mailbox, do not stay. That combination is the one Microsoft explicitly stops supporting.

Which upgrade fits which person?

The cheapest option is not always the right one. Pick by how you use Office, not by the sticker price.

1. Buy Office Home 2024 if you use one PC, want no monthly bill, and can live without new features. It pays for itself against Microsoft 365 Personal in about 18 months.
2. Take Microsoft 365 Personal or Family if you use several devices, need Outlook, or want cloud storage bundled in.
3. Choose Office LTSC 2024 only for locked-down machines that cannot connect to the cloud. Microsoft's guidance is that this suits fully offline scenarios, and o365hq lists its support end as October 9, 2029.
4. Skip the upgrade only if the machine is truly isolated.

For a household with four people, Microsoft 365 Family at $129.99 beats four copies of Office Home 2024 at $599.96. For a single user on one laptop, the perpetual license wins on cost by year two.

What should you check before you migrate?

Move files first, not last. A few items break more often than others during an Office change.

• Macros and VBA. A 32-bit macro can fail on a 64-bit install, according to the o365hq migration checklist.
• Vendor add-ins. COM add-ins from accounting or CRM tools often need a newer version.
• Publisher files. o365hq notes that Publisher retires after October 1, 2026, so export those files to PDF now.
• Scan-to-email printers. Older devices may rely on settings the new Outlook drops.
