The Pixel 11 price increase is really a RAM shortage

The Pixel 11 launched on August 12 at $899, $1,099 and $1,299 for the base, Pro and Pro XL, and the Pro Fold at $1,899 or $1,900. But the "$100 increase" headline hides a more interesting story. Compared with the Pixel 10 at the same storage, the base Pixel 11 and the Pixel 11 Pro cost the same. Google removed the cheap 128GB tier, trimmed RAM on the entry Pro, and raised the Pro XL and Fold by a clean $100. Memory costs are behind all of it.

What changed since August

• Real prices exist. In August we had leaks. Google's own announcement confirms $899, $1,099 and $1,299 for the three main models, each starting at 256GB, with shelf dates of August 20, per Google's blog.
• The increase is uneven. Our August post said every model moved up about $100. At matched storage, only two of four did.
• RAM moved too. Post-launch tables list 12GB of RAM on the 256GB Pixel 11 Pro, where the Pixel 10 Pro carried 16GB.
• The discount window opened. The Pixel 11 has already dropped to $749 on Amazon and the Pixel 10 to $599 to $649 during October sales.

How much does the Pixel 11 cost?

These are US launch prices from Memeburn's price table and GAGadget's launch report, cross-checked with Google's blog. The Pixel 10 prices are from launch-era coverage, per search results citing 9to5Google.

The headline "from $799 to $899" is true for the entry price, because the 128GB base model no longer exists. It is not true if you were already buying 256GB.

Memeburn also reports that the Pixel 11 Pro Fold ships in October rather than August, and that Pixel Watch 5 starts at $400, up from $350 for the Pixel Watch 4. Europe starts at about €1,000 for the base phone and the UK at £880, according to the same tables.

Where did the hidden cost go?

When a maker cannot raise the sticker price, it changes the contents. The Pixel 11 shows three versions of that move.

Removing the cheapest tier. The 128GB model is gone across the lineup, so the lowest price you can pay went up by $100 even though the 256GB price did not.

Trimming RAM on the Pro. Memeburn's table lists 12GB on the 256GB Pro and 16GB only on the 512GB and 1TB Pros. Notebookcheck's reporting noted that the Pixel 10 Pro always shipped with 16GB. PhoneArena's launch headline says the series "arrives with less RAM and higher price tags." Treat the Pro RAM detail as reported, not confirmed by Google, because Google's blog does not state RAM.

Raising the sticker on the biggest models. The Pro XL and Pro Fold carry the full $100 increase, because their buyers are least price sensitive.

This is the same pattern we flagged for the RTX Spark, where a cheaper base configuration quietly carries less memory. When memory is the scarce input, the spec sheet changes before the price tag does.

The RAM arithmetic behind $100

Google's VP of Devices said price "adjustments" were necessary after DRAM prices more than quadrupled compared with last year, as Android Central reported. Google cited Morgan Stanley data showing 1GB of RAM rising from $2.80 in 2025 to about $12 in 2026.

Some headlines called that a "sixfold" surge. The numbers say 4.3 times, so "more than quadrupled" is the accurate phrase. Here is what that does to one phone, assuming every gigabyte costs the quoted price:

12GB phone: 12 x $2.80 = $33.60   ->   12 x $12 = $144.00   (+$110.40)
16GB phone: 16 x $2.80 = $44.80   ->   16 x $12 = $192.00   (+$147.20)

That is our own calculation, not a Google figure. Phone makers buy at contract prices, not at one spot number, and real bills of materials differ. But it shows why a $100 increase is arithmetic rather than opportunism. The memory in a 12GB phone costs roughly $110 more than it did a year ago.

It also explains the RAM trim. Cutting 4GB from an entry Pro saves about $48 of memory at $12 per gigabyte, which is roughly half of the $100 Google would otherwise have to pass on.

Why memory got so expensive

HBM is high-bandwidth memory, the stacked chips that sit beside an AI accelerator. LPDDR is the low-power memory used in phones. Both come off overlapping production lines, and HBM pays far more. Memory makers moved wafer capacity to HBM for data centers, which left less for phones. TrendForce's September outlook puts conventional DRAM contract prices up another 10 to 15 percent in Q4, so the pressure has not eased. We cover that data in our RAM price guide.

Gartner's February forecast expected smartphone prices up 13 percent in 2026 and shipments down 8.4 percent. The industry nickname for a price rise driven by one component is memflation.

Should you buy the Pixel 11 or a Pixel 10?

The discount window has opened, which changes the answer from August.

The deals are real. During Prime Big Deal Days, the Google Store took $100 off the Pixel 11 and $200 off the Pixel 11 Pro, with Amazon adding $50 more, and the Pixel 11 reached $749 on Amazon, as reported by Android Headlines. That sale window for the Pro closed on October 11, so check current listings.

One caution cuts the other way. Notebookcheck reported that Google hinted price adjustments could reach other Pixel models already on sale. A discounted Pixel 10 today may not be discounted for long, so do not assume the bargain lasts into the holidays.

Is the storage upgrade a good deal?

Storage is a different memory market from RAM, and the Pixel 11 prices show it. Using the launch tables, the base phone costs $121 more for 512GB than for 256GB, which works out to about $0.47 per extra gigabyte. The Pro costs $230 more going from 512GB to 1TB, about $0.45 per gigabyte.

Compare that with the RAM arithmetic above. A gigabyte of RAM cost about $12 on Google's figures, while a gigabyte of flash storage is priced to the buyer at under fifty cents. Storage is far cheaper per gigabyte, even though NAND prices are also rising. If you need room for photos, the upgrade is reasonable. If you want more RAM, you mostly cannot buy it separately, because it comes bundled with the higher tiers.

What to check on any 2026 phone spec sheet

The Pixel 11 is a template for what other makers will do. Before you buy, check four lines, because they are where costs get hidden:

1. The storage tier you are comparing. Match it to last year's phone, not to the entry price.
2. The RAM at that tier. A "same price" phone with less RAM is a smaller deal than it looks.
3. The update promise. A longer software support window matters more over four years than a $100 difference today.
4. The discount history. Pixels have dropped within weeks of launch in past years, so a launch-day purchase is rarely the best price.

What about the "Android uses less memory" plan?

Google also said it is reworking Android to use less memory, per The Next Web. It is a smart idea, because a leaner OS lets a 12GB phone feel like a 16GB one. It is also hard to verify. The Pro RAM trim is the first real test: if the 12GB Pro performs like last year's 16GB model, Google's claim holds. Wait for reviews that run memory-heavy apps and on-device AI, since those are the workloads where a RAM cut shows.

The takeaway

The Pixel 11 price story is not "everything costs $100 more." It is "the cheap tier disappeared, one tier lost RAM, and two models went up." That is a more honest description of what a memory shortage does to a phone.
